Important Tips for Driving at Night

Nighttime driving tends to be a trickier task, so it's important to follow tips for staying safe while driving. These tips are also great for new drivers, especially teens.

  • One of the most important tips to remember for nighttime driving is to remember to keep headlights, taillights, and signal nights clean. Dirt and debris covering them will decrease your chances of being seen by another vehicle.
  • If you have recently purchased a new vehicle, be sure that the headlights are aiming correctly.
  • Be sure to dim your instrument panel and dash lights before heading out at night. Bright lights can hinder your driving skills.
  • Always reduce speed and increase driving distance when driving at night. This is especially important when living in woodsy areas where deer and other large animals reside.
  • Do not use high beams when approaching another vehicle. This can potentially blind them causing a major accident.
  • If blinded, use the shoulder of the road as a guide.
  • Raise and/or lower rearview mirror to eliminate bright lights of vehicles behind you.
  • Keep you eyes moving constantly rather than focusing on just one area when driving at night.
  • NEVER drink and drive!
