Ram 2500 Towing Capacity and Engine Specs

If you need a lot of towing strength, you'll need an engine with plenty of power and low-end torque. The Ram 2500 delivers by giving you a choice between two different powertrains:
 | 6.4L HEMI® V8 | 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6 |
Horsepower | 410 horsepower | 370 horsepower |
Torque | 429 lb-ft of torque | 850 lb-ft of torque |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic | 6-speed automatic |
Max. Towing Capacity | 17,540 pounds | 19,680 pounds |
Â
As you can see in the table above, the diesel-powered, 6.7L I-6 engine delivers the highest towing capacity. That high torque output of 850 lb-ft is one of the main reasons why it can help you tow more than 19,000 pounds.
The 6.4L HEMI® V8 engine comes standard and still offers an impressive towing capacity of 17,540 pounds. This is a gas-powered engine that comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This smart transmission uses on-the-fly shift mapping to provide an extra level of refinement to every drive and optimize your shift schedules for towing.
To achieve maximum towing capacity with either engine, make sure to go with the 4x2 drivetrain. The available 4x4 drivetrain improves off-roading capability, but slightly decreases towing capacity.
Body Style and Towing Capacity for the Ram 2500
Body style is something you may not consider when talking about towing capacity for your Ram 2500, but it actually plays a very big role in how much weight your pickup can pull. This is because different body styles and bed lengths affect your Ram truck's curb weight, which affects how much you can tow.

For your body style, you'll have three options: Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and Mega Cab. You also get two bed styles to choose from: an 8-foot box and a 6-foot, 4-inch box. Here's how they can pair up-and how that affects what you can tow:
Max. Towing Capacities | Regular Cab | Crew Cab | Mega Cab |
8-foot Box | 19,680 pounds | 19,150 pounds | N/A |
6-foot, 4-inch Box | N/A | 19,310 pounds | 16,460 pounds |
Note that the Regular Cab and Crew Cab both reach their maximum towing capacities with the diesel engine, while the Mega Cab does so with the gas-powered HEMI® V8.
In general, the Crew Cab and Mega Cab are the better picks for you if you're going to be carrying a lot of passengers. However, if you're looking to maximize towing capabilities, you may prefer the smaller and lighter Regular Cab.Â
