Checking your engine oil level is vital to the safety and optimal performance of your vehicle. It's also a relatively simple procedure. If you're interested in doing it from home, feel free to use the following guide provided to New City, Nanuet, and Pearl River area drivers by the folks here at Rockland CDJR.How to Check Engine Oil Level Step 1: Keep it Level
Before you get started, the first thing you want to make sure of is that the car is parked on level ground for you to get an accurate reading. Once you're parked, turn the car off and wait about 15 minutes or so for the engine to cool.
Step 2: Find the Oil Dipstick
Go ahead and pop open the hood and locate the oil dipstick if you don't already know where to find it. You can usually recognize it by its orange or red plastic tab. If you're having trouble, take a look at your owner's manual for the exact spot.
Checking Oil Level Step 3: Remove the Dipstick
After you've found the oil dipstick, take it out. This part might be a little messy due to the fact that it will have oil on it. Be aware of this when you go to do it yourself and wear appropriate clothing. Similarly, it's completely up to you whether or not you would like to wear gloves.
Step 4: Wipe the Dipstick Down
For this step, you'll want to use a clean rag. Be sure to wipe it from the handle down to the tip. Â
Step 5: Reinsert the Dipstick
When you're sure that it's free of oil, place it back in. Make sure it goes all the way in and wait a moment before taking it back out.
Step 6: Pull the Dipstick Out and Take a Look
After you've taken the stick out again, examine it on both sides to make sure it's even-this way, your reading will be accurate. Near the top of the dipstick, you'll find indicators that let you know whether the oil is too low, too high, or just right.
Step 7: Examine the Oil Itself
While you've got it out, take a look at the oil on the dipstick at this time. You're watching for consistency and color. If the oil has dirt in it, and is thick or black, you're going to want to have it changed.
Final Step of Checking Your Engine Oil Level Step 8: Finishing Up
When you're satisfied that everything looks the way it should, wipe the dipstick down again and put it back in. If it feels like it gets stuck and won't let you put it in all the way, take it back out, turn it around, and try it again. This will happen because the dipstick is designed to go in only one way. Once it's all the way in, close the hood.
